Random Number Generator for Research
Generate random integers within a defined range for research sampling, experimental allocation, simulation exercises, and reproducible study workflows.
Generate random numbers for research and data work
This Random Number Generator produces whole numbers between a minimum and maximum value. You can choose how many values to generate and whether duplicate values are allowed. When unique numbers are selected, the generator samples without replacement from the available integer range.
Random numbers can support simple random sampling, assigning participants or experimental units to groups, creating simulation inputs, and preparing practice datasets. The generated values are displayed individually and can be copied directly for use in a spreadsheet or research workflow.
Why randomization matters in research
Random selection or allocation can reduce predictable selection patterns and help researchers apply a predefined sampling or assignment procedure. The calculator is a utility for generating values; the appropriate randomization method, eligibility rules, allocation procedure, and study design should still be defined before the values are used in actual research.

Generated Random Numbers
How the Random Number Generator works
For duplicate values, each integer is independently selected from the inclusive range using a random number calculation. For unique values, the generator first creates the complete integer pool and then shuffles that pool before selecting the requested number of values. This prevents the same value from being returned twice within a unique-number set.
Number of possible integers = Maximum − Minimum + 1
Unique-number rule:
The requested count cannot exceed the number of integers available in the selected range.
For example, a range from 1 to 100 contains 100 possible integer values. If you request 10 values with duplicates allowed, any value may occur more than once. If you choose unique numbers, the ten returned values are distinct.
Common applications
- Simple random selection of numbered records or observations.
- Random allocation of experimental units to predefined groups.
- Generating simulation inputs and test datasets.
- Selecting practice observations for statistical exercises.
- Creating random integer sequences for methodological demonstrations.
What to define before generating values
- Specify the minimum and maximum values clearly.
- Decide whether repeated values are acceptable.
- Set the required number of values before sampling.
- Document how generated values will be mapped to participants, samples, or groups.
- For formal studies, record the randomization procedure and any required seed or audit information.

Important considerations when using random numbers
Random-number generation is only one part of a research randomization procedure. A valid study may also require a sampling frame, clearly defined inclusion criteria, allocation concealment, blocking or stratification, and documentation of the randomization method. For sensitive or regulated applications, use the randomization procedure specified by the study protocol or statistical analysis plan.
The generator on this page is intended for practical research calculations and general randomization tasks. It should not be treated as a cryptographic random-number source or as a substitute for specialized statistical software when a study requires auditable or protocol-specific randomization.
Random Number Generator frequently asked questions
Can I generate duplicate numbers?
Yes. Choose “Allow Duplicates” when repeated values are acceptable.
How do I generate unique random numbers?
Select “Unique Numbers Only.” The requested count must not exceed the number of integers in the selected range.
Are the minimum and maximum values included?
Yes. Both endpoints are included in the integer range.
Can I copy the generated numbers?
Yes. Use the Copy Results button to copy the generated values as a comma-separated list.
Can this be used for research sampling?
It can support simple random selection and allocation workflows, but the complete sampling or randomization method should be defined according to your study design.
Generate, document, and verify
Define the sampling or allocation rule first, generate the required values, verify the range and uniqueness requirements, and document how the values were used. This makes a simple random-number calculation easier to interpret and reproduce as part of a broader research workflow.
